Landscape Photography Insights
Thomas Heaton is a landscape photographer based in England, though he travels all over the world. His YouTube channel takes us on a little photo adventure in most every episode. Thomas takes us to all those natural wonders that we’ve been aching to explore – plus many we never knew existed.
In each episode, you’ll feel like you’re on the road with Thomas, living his challenges and successes. It’s just like taking a walk with a much more knowledgeable friend. He chats about what he’s looking for and why he’s making the photographic choices that he’s making. It makes you feel like you’re actually standing next to Thomas with your tripod – without having to hike for miles in the cold.
The videography is spectacular, using the media to really emphasize the journey. The videography is so smooth, you may think this is easy – it isn’t! Watching the videos will give all those budding videographers out there some things to think about.
One thing I particularly like is that he intersperses the final image into the videos. We can listen to Thomas talking about what type of photo he’s looking for, see the scene he is photographing, and then the final image. We've been with him every step of the way.
For those landscape photographers who’ve had a bad day, struggled with uncooperative weather or head-slapping moments like leaving your extra batteries in the car, watch “The UGLY side of Landscape Photography” video – you aren’t alone, even the pros have a bad day!
He even has a video of him trying to do street photography in London, not a successful experience from Thomas’ point of view. I guess we can’t all be good at every photography genre – though Thomas may be a little hard on himself.
For those of you who would like to follow in Thomas’ footsteps, every so often he’ll stay indoors and talk gear or do a post-processing video.
But mainly Thomas is known for his landscape work and I love the videos when he is in the field. He’s posted quite a few videos and tries for 2 per week. I’m not sure I have a favorite. I feel like I’ve had a little 10-minute travel adventure after each of his videos.
I appreciate the awe that Thomas brings with him, seeing beauty even in the most mundane places. I appreciate his honesty. He talks openly about when he’s getting the shot, but also when he’s not. Not every photo and not every trip is a whole-hearted success – and landscape photography can be hard work.
Even if you’re not a landscape photographer, being able to effectively see into the mind of a professional photographer of Thomas Heaton’s caliber is worth watching. Every step of the way, we get insight into his decision-making and we get to see the final results.
